Plant resistance as a bacterial blight management strategy for cassava: A Review

Abstract:
Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a major food crop and raw material to the manufacture industry in the tropics. However, the full production potential of this crop has not been realised owing to numerous challenges that plague its production. The objective of this review was to perform a systematic review of the achievements and shortfalls of research for development (R4D) in plant resistance as a strategy for managing bacterial blight disease of cassava in Sub-Saharan region.. The study found scarce information on host pathogen relationship of both causal agents and cassava. At present there is not a variety available to farmers with sufficient resistance to CBB and that any work on resistance ought to be done to suit prevailing local agroeclogical conditions Key words: Africa, Bacterial blight, cassava host resistance
