Abstract:
Climate change is associated with rising temperatures, elevated carbon dioxide, variable rainfall patterns and frequent droughts, reduced soil carbon and mineral nutrients, and increased influx of pests and diseases, in addition to adverse effects on postharvest systems. Crop scientists at the University of Nairobi in collaboration with other research and development institutions are exploring opportunities to enhance climate resilient cropping systems. In the year 2017/2018, approximately 57 articles were published in peer-reviewed journals. New varieties and advanced lines with drought tolerance and multiple resistance to diseases have been developed. Many crops have been screened against emerging insect pests. Adaptation strategies for improved agronomy and better postharvest technologies have been developed in collaboration with farmers and other stakeholders. Key research areas that strengthen the adaptive capacity of cropping systems to climate change are discussed.
